2016: Help for 8.4 million people

Welthungerhilfe's annual report documents progress despite droughts and conflicts

In 2016, thanks to your help, we were able to assist millions of people in need: We had a total of EUR 263.9 m available to use in the fight against hunger and poverty. Welthungerhilfe’s work in 2016 was dominated by the impact of the war in Syria and hunger in many African countries.

407 projects in 39 countries: 8.4 million people reached

A new Africa policy is required

Droughts and threatening famines meant that more than 12 million people in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and South Sudan alone were dependent on humanitarian assistance. "The situation in Africa will be crucial for a peaceful geopolitical development. That’s why we call on the German government to develop a new Africa policy – together with its G20 partners and the African countries," says Bärbel Dieckmann, President of Welthungerhilfe.

Facts & Figures

There have been clear successes in recent years too: Since 2000, the hunger value in developing countries has decreased by 29 percent and no region has stagnated in its fight against hunger. A world without hunger is not a dream and is no mere vision. It is a human right that we can realise together!

Thanks to your donations, we were able to support 8.4 million people in 2016. 407 international projects in 39 countries helped to enable independent lives for people. 17 domestic projects increased awareness of hunger and poverty in the German and European public and politics.

Focus: rural and regional development

Rural and regional development has been the most significant financial funding sector for Welthungerhilfe for many years. With 92.8 million euros, this sector is once again a greater focus than in 2015.

At 1.8%, our administrative costs this year are again very low. 3.6% of the total expenditure was used for public relations work and advertising.
