The impact of the war in Syria and hunger in many African countries dominated the work of Welthungerhilfe in 2016. Therefore, the partnership with Africa must play a central role in the G20 negotiations in Germany. “A world without hunger is not a vision but a human right. The situation in Africa will have a crucial influence ensuring peaceful geopolitical development. We therefore demand that the Federal Government, together with the partners of the G20 and African countries, develop a new African policy”, says Bärbel Dieckmann, President of Welthungerhilfe.

In 2016, 263.9 million euros were available to fight hunger. This is Welthungerhilfe’s highest budget since it was founded. Private donations amounted to 47.5 million euros. With 213.4 million euros, public donors provided the highest total funding for project work 50 percent of this was contributed by the German government Iraq, South Sudan, Sudan, Sierra Leone and Syria / Turkey received the highest project funding.

The current hunger crisis in Africa and Yemen shows that the existing funding mechanisms for humanitarian aid have reached their limits. The dramatic developments were foreseeable for months due to good early warning systems. "So far the international response to crises has been following the motto: early warning - no action. We need financing that provides funds before the crisis begins. We know from experience that with early intervention we can extremely reduce both the damage on site and the costs of the aid", emphasizes Dr. Till Wahnbaeck, Chief Executive Officer of the Welthungerhilfe.

Welthungerhilfe is one of the largest private aid organisations in Germany; politically independent and non-denominational. It is fighting for "A world without hunger by 2030". Since its establishment in 1962, more than 8,500 overseas projects in 70 countries have been supported with 3,27 billion euros. Welthungerhilfe works on the principle of help for self-help: from fast disaster relief to reconstruction and long-term development cooperation projects with national and international partner organisations. #ZeroHunger by 2030
