2011 Annual Report
Starvation in Sahel – no easing of the situation in sight
(26.06.2012) The donors have impressively proved their solidarity with the victims of the disaster and we would like to thank them for this,” said Dr. Wolfgang Jamann, Chief Executive Board of Welthungerhilfe at the presentation of the 2011 Annual Report.
The President of Welthungerhilfe, Bärbel Dieckmann, emphasized that in contrast to East Africa in 2011 Early Warning Systems in the Sahel had worked successfully. The countries affected, aid agencies and international donors had reacted early to the emergency, thus implementing the lessons learned from East Africa. However, there is no reason to give the all clear yet, because around eight million people continue to rely on emergency aid as a result of drought, harvest failures and high food prices in addition to the tense security situation. "We have to continue our support, because the coming four months until the harvest will be decisive. Otherwise starvation can occur at any time," warned Dieckmann.
In 2011 Welthungerhilfe achieved the third best donation result in its 50 year history of a total of 48.2 million euros. The total revenues were 136.5 million euros. In 2011 Welthungerhilfe supported a total of 300 projects in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
