Each year the number of people who do not have enough to eat increases. The latest figures from the FAO (Sep. 2010) show an alarming picture: in 2008 there are 925 million people who have to suffer from hunger. This constitutes an increase of 40 million compared to the previous year.

This situation is mainly caused by rising prices for food, fuel and fertilisers. Millions of vulnerable households face a severe threat to their food security.

Young children and mothers have to get better nutrition - to change the global hunger situtation.

Growing demand for biofuels, extreme weather and climate change, and increased financial activity through commodity futures markets are the main causes of high and volatile food prices, according to the 2011 Global Hunger Index report, The Challenge of Hunger: Taming Price Spikes and Excessive Food Price Volatility.
