(10.08.2010) The situation in the flood areas in Pakistan is still disastrous. The UN estimates that over 13 million people have been affected by the flood waters.  Aid is urgently required since people lack even the most basic essentials. "50 years' of progress have been wiped out overnight", reports Concern employee, Mubashir Ahmad. That's why Welthungerhilfe is continuing to ask for donations in order to be able to provide the victims with food, drinking water and sanitary articles.

"The people in Pakistan are confronted by a disaster of historic proportions. In view of the alarming situation Welthungerhilfe has decided to extend its aid and to immediately make another 100,000 euros available to its partner organisations, Concern and Cesvi", says Mathias Mogge, Welthungerhilfe's Director of Programmes.

Many parts of the country are still virtually inaccessible. The first successes can nevertheless be reported. In the Swat and Charsadda regions in the north of the country Welthungerhilfe has already supplied basic essentials to 12,000 people via its Irish partner organisation, Concern. Another 30,000 people in need will soon receive drinking water, food, sanitary articles and other important aid goods. Our Italian partner Cesvi has also been able to distribute drinking water, food, tents and tarpaulins to several hundred people in the North.

"The monsoon season has only just begun and we fear the situation could deteriorate further. Moreover, we don't know what the situation is like in the remote districts. We have to assume that the people of Pakistan will require aid for a long time to come", says Mathias Mogge.
