(02.08.2010) After the most devastating floods in recent decades in Pakistan have caused over 1,000 deaths Welthungerhilfe is asking for donations. Mathias Mogge, Welthungerhilfe's Director of Programmes and Projects, says: "We are providing help where people are in need and where we can help. In this case the needs are great – and we want to help the flood victims quickly."

Although Welthungerhilfe itself is no longer working in Pakistan, it has an experienced partner locally in the form of the Irish aid agency, Concern Worldwide. Concern has been working alongside Welthungerhilfe for over ten years in Alliance2015, a grouping of seven European aid agencies that have worked together successfully for over ten years.

"We are pleased that we can provide rapid and effective aid in the disaster area in conjunction with our longstanding partner, Concern", says Mathias Mogge, "since this means that we are ideally placed to help locally even though Welthungerhilfe itself is no longer working in Pakistan".

The aid is in particular being provided in the especially badly affected Swat district in Kyber Pakhtunkhwa, and the funds are being use to provide the victims of the floods with drinking water and the goods that are most urgently needed in such a situation, e.g. plastic tarpaulins for covering wrecked roofs or ceilings, and also sanitary articles.

In order to be able to help as fast as possible Welthungerhilfe is providing 50,000 euros for initial emergency relief aid.

Welthungerhilfe is appealing for donations, which should be sent to:
