Welthungerhilfe is helping the victims of the latest flooding in Pakistan

(20.09.2011) Welthungerhilfe is helping the victims of the latest flooding in the Sindh province in southern Pakistan. Over four million people have been affected by the flooding; almost one million houses have been destroyed; and more than 220,000 people are living in encampments, having lost everything. Welthungerhilfe is providing 10,000 tarpaulins and 5,000 hygiene parcels containing buckets, soap, mosquito nets and pots and pans. The European Alliance2015 partners of Welthungerhilfe, who have access to competent local staff in the villages, have taken charge of distribution within the affected areas.

"Our shared approach within the framework of our Alliance2015 is proving its worth in this emergency too. There is a clear division of labour, which accelerates the help that we can provide on location. We procure the relief items, and the other organisations utilise their local presence for the distribution", said Achim Apweiler, Regional Coordinator for Welthungerhilfe in Pakistan, explaining the networked approach.

The families who had already lost their entire existence in the catastrophic flooding in the summer of last year require special assistance. Many had already rebuilt their houses and resowed their fields. They have seen their belongings get washed away for the second time in as many years.

Welthungerhilfe is currently using donations that were collected for the flooding catastrophe that hit last year, and allocated for planned measures to provide long-term aid, to help these people through this latest crisis by providing emergency aid. As a result of the magnitude of this recent catastrophe, Welthungerhilfe is requesting further donations for the victims of flooding in Pakistan:
