Angola

Welthungerhilfe has been active in Angola since 1986. During these years we have implemented about 96 projects amounting to a total of approximately 110 million euros. Our main focus in Angola is rehabilitation and reconstruction, food security and promotion of small animal husbandry.

Burkina Faso

The oldest man of a village in Burkina shows the filled granary. © BretzWelthungerhilfe has been working in Burkina Faso since 1968. During this period we have implemented about 138 projects amounting to a total of 20 million euros. These projects concentrate on food security, rural development and resource management. We support children and youth and campaign for HIV & Aids prevention.

DR Congo

This woman is breaking stones with a hammer to build a new street in the DR Congo. © MeissnerWelthungerhilfe has been active in Congo since 1997. With a project volume of almost 78 million euros, we are reaching more than seven million people. We are rebuilding schools and health centres. Refugees returning to their home villages are given seed, agricultural equipment and food aid to bridge the difficult period until the first harvest.

Ethiopia

Portrait of a street child in Ethiopia. Since the beginning of our activities in Ethiopia in 1973, Welthungerhilfe has implemented 195 projects amounting to approximately 90 million euros. Our projects focus on emergency aid, food security, drinking water and sanitation programmes and irrigation.

Kenya

Welthungerhilfe has been working in Kenya since the 1970s. At the moment, we are implementing 8 projects amounting to a total of 9.1 million euros. These projects concentrate on rural development, water and sanitary services, resource protection, combating HIV&AIDS and the promotion of disadvantaged children and youth.

Selected project in Liberia: New economic basis for the people

Creating a new economic basis for the people - that is Welthungerhilfe's aim in the south-east of Liberia. There has been over-exploitation of tropical timber resources in the Grand Gedeh, River Gee and Sinoe districts for years. Economic activity has stagnated for a long time now. The people are almost entirely left to fend for themselves.

Madagascar

A Woman is cooking a healthy meal for a group of school children in Madagascar. Since 1992 Welthungerhilfe has implemented 30 projects with a volume of approximately 19 million euros in Madagascar. Our work concentrates on emergency and food aid, drinking water supply, rehabilitation and disaster planning. We help to strengthen civil society and provide immediate and survival aid for small children.

Mali

In our projects, we focus on rural development, resource management, food security, social integration and education.

Mozambique

Since then, we have completed 111 projects amounting to approximately 75 million euros. Our work focuses on food security, reconstruction, integrated rural development and the prevention and mitigation of HIV&AIDS.

Rwanda

Women working on their field in Rwanda. © Betzelt Since our first project in Rwanda in 1981 Welthungerhilfe has implemented 28 projects for about 31 million euros. These projects include rural development, food security and the support of civil society, children and young people.

Selected project in Sierra Leone: Food security


The project intends to improve the food security of the poorest and most vulnerable, to decrease the rural poverty and to support the transition from relief to sustainable development. To achieve these goals Welthungerhilfe works closely with a local partner, "Environmental Foundation for Africa".

South Africa

In South Africa we mainly campaign for HIV & Aids prevention and mitigation.

Sudan

Fishing in Sudan. © Herzau. Welthungerhilfe has been active in Sudan since the Sahel drought in the 1980s. We concentrate mainly on the provinces of North Darfur, West Kordofan and Unity State. After the outbreak of the civil war in 2003, we started to supply more than half a million people in North Darfur with food. Other focal points of our project work are agriculture, food security and drinking water supplies.

Uganda

Young people at a youth conference in Uganda. Since 1980 Welthungerhilfe has been working in Uganda. From 1999 to 2008 we have implemented 20 projects for about 7.4 million euros. In our projects, we concentrate on rural development, water supply and support for civil society.  We also work in the area of crises, conflicts and disasters.

Zimbabwe

Thereby, we focus on food security, the supply of drinking water and rural development. Since 1980 Welthungerhilfe has implemented 150 projects amounting to approximately 40 million euros.
