Tajikistan: Using natural resources more efficiently to end poverty and hunger

High mountains, deep valleys, cold winters and hot summers – Tajikistan in Central Asia is a country of extremes. In many parts the land is dry, the soil overused and the forests cut down. Generating income from agriculture is therefore very hard, but most people in Tajikistan live from what they can get from their fields.

During the past years Welthungerhilfe has been successfully implementing integrated approaches that try to look at the root causes of degradation of agricultural and pasture land.  Only a holistic approach that includes the efficient use of all natural resources available, such as arable and pasture land, water, forests or animal dung as fertilizer will eventually lead to a an enduringly healthy environment that can provide for the people on the long term.

Activities like these can only succeed if the people, civil society and local authorizes are aware and work in close cooperation.

With the support of Welthungerhilfe the local nongovernmental organization Azal was established in 2006 to work with communities in Tajikistan in order to reduce poverty of the rural population especially by promoting integrated resource management. In their projects the communities learn for example how to store water for irrigation, how to produce and use organic fertilizer and how to sustain their natural resources.
