Overview of Our Topics
According to official statistics, 963 million people suffer from hunger worldwide. This means that every seventh person is denied the right to food. Hunger is the direct consequence of insufficient earnings: those who live in absolute poverty have no money for appropriate food become ill and die. The global hunger crisis is exacerbated by rising food prices and a growing shortage of food.
If people's lives are immediately threatened by natural disasters or armed conflicts, they initially depend on rapid and effective help. After the emergency aid is administered, long-term and sustainable development aid is provided. The prime objective is to enable the victims to survive and to rebuild their livelihoods. Welthungerhilfe is supporting this process together with its partners in 70 countries.
Climate change and the greenhouse effect are on everyone's lips. The consequences affect us all, because the weather is fundamentally changing throughout the world. People in the developing countries are suffering from this particularly severely however: droughts, floods, or hurricanes leave lost harvests, hunger and epidemics in their wake.
Development cooperation is cooperation between donor and developing countries with the objective of improving social, economic, political and ecological conditions in the developing countries. It includes financial, technical and personnel cooperation. Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) like Welthungerhilfe make a large contribution towards humanitarian aid and project work.
Welthungerhilfe is convinced that education is the key to reducing poverty and preventing hunger. Educational poverty and a related frequency of hunger are particularly concentrated in the rural regions of developing countries. Most of the children who do not go to school also live here.
