Global Hunger Index 2012

The 2012 Global Hunger Index shows that the progress in reducing the proportion of hungry people in the world has been slow. According to the index, hunger on a global scale remains "alarming" or "extremely alarming".

Twenty countries still have levels of hunger that are "alarming" or "extremely alarming". Among the world's regions, South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa continue to have the highest levels of hunger. These results represent extreme suffering for millions of poor people. It is important to note that the GHI scores present country averages: even in countries classified as having "moderate" or "serious" hunger, there can be areas where the situation is "alarming". The GHI report focuses particulary on the issues of how to ensure sustainable food security under conditions of water, land, and energy stress. This report describes the evidence on land, water and energy scarcity in developing countries and offers two visions of a future global food system.
