4th Round- Joint think tank

Interesting questions on the future of our work

(Autumn 2013) Do we need to change from an aid organisation to a knowledge organisation? Will ‘help’ be shared to become ‘knowledge’? This question was discussed in the first part of the fourth – and joint – think tank, at which 18 lateral thinkers from culture, sport, science and economics met in Berlin at the end of October on the invitation of Welthungerhilfe. Among other things, they discussed with Ralf Bremer from Google about how the global digital divide will be lifted and how the transition from information to knowledge can be achieved.

“Information is just the raw material that must be processed”, according to Bremer. Anke Domscheit-Berg suggests making available internet platforms for widespread problems, such as in areas of sanitation and hygiene, through which knowledge will be gathered and will be easily findable. In comparison, Marco Bode does not only want to “transmit knowledge, but also the joy of knowledge”.

In the second part, it was about this question: “What does it mean for the country when cities grow?” Does Welthungerhilfe need to change its focus due to urbanisation and pay more attention to nutrition in the cities? More and more people are moving to the towns and cities, hoping for jobs, educational opportunities and better health provision. Or, as Gerd Leopold expands, because they “want to escape the constriction of the villages”. With migration, the countryside comes to the cities, said Michael Schindhelm, in reality, a ‘de-urbanisation’ of the cities can be observed. For Welthungerhilfe, a number of points of contact come out of these trends, such as the improvement of value chains in rural regions to the improvement of urban nutrition security.
