Offensive Against Mosul
Welthungerhilfe is preparing for a large flow of displaced people.
Since the military offensive against Mosul has started this morning, Welthungerhilfe is preparing to provide for families fleeing from the embattled city. The United Nations expect that up to one million people or more could flee. Together with the United Nations and other aid organisations, Welthungerhilfe has been developing intensive plans to provide humanitarian aid to the large number of displaced people fleeing from Mosul to the surrounding areas.
"We know that hundreds of thousands of people will flee from Mosul in the coming days and weeks, and that they can only take their clothes and few belongings with them. That is why we have put together packages for a first emergency supply for about 1,800 families. These packages contain tarpaulins and tools to set up a provisional emergency shelter. After that, the people need blankets and warm clothing, because in a few weeks it will be very cold in the North of Iraq, "says country director, Mike Bonke, from Dohuk.
Welthungerhilfe has been working in the North of Iraq for two years and supports internally displaced people around Erbil and Dohuk on their return to their home regions. They escaped from their villages after the conquest of Mosul by the IS in June 2014. The organisation’s focus is on rebuilding schools and irrigation systems.
