Welthungerhilfe sharply condemns the recent shelling of hospitals in Syria. According to local partner organisations, hospitals in Azaz in the province of Aleppo and in Maarat al-Numan in the Idlip Province were hit.

“These attacks make our humanitarian support even more difficult. Just this past week, we’ve been training new nurses and health care assistants in the now destroyed hospital in Idlip. We urgently appeal to all warring parties to comply with minimum standards and to at least spare hospitals and refugee camps,” stresses Till Wahnbaeck, Chief Executive Director of Welthungerhilfe.

Together with a Syrian partner organisation, Welthungerhilfe has been training medical staff since the end of last year. Especially women benefit from this programme and are able to find work this way. Many of the programme’s participants are refugees themselves who were forced to flee their villages.

According to UN-sources more than 10,000 people fled Aleppo and its surroundings during the past few days – mostly women and children. They are seeking shelter near the Turkish border, since entering the neighbouring country is currently not possible. More than 90,000 people are already waiting in the border town of Azaz, and they urgently need assistance. Welthungerhilfe is one of the very few German humanitarian aid organisations that actively work together with partners inside Syria. The organisation is currently focusing on providing tents and stoves.

Welthungerhilfe is one of the largest private aid organisations in Germany; politically independent and non-denominational. It is fighting for ‘Zero Hunger by 2030’. Since its establishment, more than 8,500 overseas projects in 70 countries have been supported with 3.27 billion euros. Welthungerhilfe works on the basic principle of empowering people to help themselves: from rapid disaster relief to reconstruction and long-term development cooperation projects with national and international partner organisations
